December 2004
What Are You Tolerating?
In this issue:
A Note From the Coach
Tolerations: Dealing with the little things.
It's a busy time of year
and in these last few
days before Christmas things can feel particularly
overwhelming. If you are living with someone with
special needs, ordinary life can feel like too much
just keeping up to (or ahead of) them, let alone with
additional Christmas pressures. You wish that life
could be better but feel like nothing can change because
the special need is there to stay.
But most of us have a lot of little things hanging
over us that drain us such as much, if not more, than
the big things. Take a few minutes to consider what
little things are draining you: the unfolded clothes
in that pile in the corner, the leaky faucet, the
doctors appointment you have been meaning to
book
Life coaches call these "tolerations"
those ongoing annoyances that eat at a person
but seem minor so we keep ignoring them. Experts tell
us that most people have about 100 at any given time!
My challenge for you this December and January is
to consider what little things could be handled so
that you would have more energy for the big things.
What could you change that would make next year better?
Where to Start: List as many of these jobs (tolerations)
as you can think of. Keep a notepad or post-it handy
and add things to your list over the coming week.
Include everything you look at and think "I should
"
-
Once you have your list, pick ONE
thing you can take care of TODAY. Then do it. For
the remaining items:
-
Decide which things you need to
finish before the end of this year so that you dont
have to think about them again in 2005.
-
Decide which items need to be done
next year and assign timelines to each item. Break
them up. Assign items to different days or months.
Then take care of that ONE item on the day it comes
up.
My challenge for you is to have your best year yet
in 2005. Here are some ways I can support you (scroll
down for more details on each):
Wishing you a happy Christmas and a toleration-reduced
NewYear!
